What an extraordinary site - I've spent some hours here and plan on shirking work a few hours longer. I'm listening to the Maestro now (Btvn's 7th, last recording), and although I miss two of the many repeats in this work, I still love the sleekness - and in a sense purity - of his essentially cut-to-the-chase approach. There are many other conductors I like and I own quite a few Beethoven sets, so I know and understand the more "pure" approach many others take - but I always come back to HvK's. A non-sequitur segue: On a bus tour in Salzburg back in '85 I half-jokingly asked the driver if he'd drive by the Karajan residence, which wasn't on the tour, and actually some kilometers off. He asked the others on the bus if we could take ten minutes more and got their assent, then headed off to show us the former church, now Maestro-abode. I was fortunate enough to hear the Berlin Phil under him in Pasadena in '82 - Beethoven's 5th and 6th. Two seats to my right was Leontyne Price, with whom I spoke during intermission. At the end of the 5th (played second), she started sobbing and did so all the way out of the theater. And I felt like a giddy hero-worshipping idiot when, during the end ovation Karajan bowed to Price and actually took me in with those piercing baby blues. What a night!

I have this album by Karajan named "Karajan Family Concert". The album is red and is recorded by Angel Records Japan. The jacket front is blue and the back has a picture of a lady in a green dress with three children. Inside the jacket is written in Japanese. I have not been able to find any information about it. If anyone that reads this and knows the album in question please e-mail me. Thanks atimetokeep@ymail..com

Hello,
I absolutely love this website. For school, we did a project called "the conductors assignment". I chose Karajan, as I grew up listening to his recordings, and I loved the music he produced from the orchestra - but I didn't know much more than that. After I finished this project, I realized how much I actually learned from this website. It has helped me quite a great deal...I would just like to say THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I have a very special request: All Karajan fans should contact Deutsche Grammophon and urge them to remaster all of Maestro Von Karajan's analogue recordings --expensive, I know--and reissue them with the original LP covers! Didn't Karajan personally listen to and approve his recordings before release? In my opinion, many of DG's remasterings are simply terrible and not worthy to represent Karajan's recorded legacy. Sincerely, James Paine

Von Karajan had a lot to do with fomenting my love of classical music. Early on, I often would purchase a composition I was unfamiliar with because I was pretty sure I would like it if Von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic were performing it.
